A Chinese Amber-Resin Figure of a Luohan, 41FH
Cast or carved from translucent amber-colored red resin with internal tonal variation, scattered inclusions, and minor entrapped bubbles, the figure represents a standing luohan shown holding a staff across one shoulder. The luohan is depicted with a forward-moving stance, the robe drawn closely around the body and carved with smooth, flowing folds that emphasize verticality and weight. The head is bald, with strongly modeled facial features including pronounced brows, deeply set eyes, a broad nose, and a short beard, while the ears are elongated in accordance with established luohan iconography. A circular object, possibly a bundle or symbolic attribute, is positioned behind the shoulder and integrated into the composition. The surface is smoothly polished, with minor casting or carving irregularities visible in recessed areas. The material and workmanship correspond to decorative resin figures produced in China during the 20th century, intended to imitate the appearance of carved amber. Height 7.5 cm (2 15/16 in.), width 5.5 cm (2 3/16 in.).
Provenance:
