A Chinese Archaistic Style Jade 'Dragon and Phoenix' Bi Disc
An intricately decorated and substantial archaistic jade ritual disc (bi), beautifully rendered on both sides in the classical style of the Late Warring States to Han Dynasty period. The flat, circular body is centered with a cleanly cut circular aperture (hao). The disc surface is deeply carved in relief and accented with fine dual-line incised details, displaying an interlocking composition of highly stylized mythical beasts, including scrolling dragons and elegant long-tailed phoenixes. The background fields are meticulously filled with geometric cross-hatching and diaper patterns, evoking the luxurious aesthetic of ancient elite ritual jades. The hardstone medium displays a highly varied and dramatic mottled surface, purposefully showing extensive areas of opaque "chicken-bone white" calcification intermingled with warm, translucent honey-yellow, olive-green, and dark iron-red earthy staining. The outer edge and inner rim are smoothly finished with a uniform thickness. The piece is presented on a later clear acrylic display stand. Diameter: 6.25 in. Provenance: Collection from Professor of University of Chicago in IL USA .
Condition
The archaistic jade disc is in overall excellent decorative condition, remaining structurally complete and completely free of any modern breaks, structural losses, or repairs. The exterior edges and inner rim remain smooth, crisp, and robust.
