A Chinese Blue and White ‘Kylin’ jar and Cover

Of ovoid form, with flat-topped cover, the body painted in underglaze blue with a fierce Kylin with scaly body and cloven feet, set amongst stylised rockwork and swirling clouds, the back with plantain and mountains, the cover with stylised rockwork, the base unglazed. Period: Shunzhi (1644‑1661). Height: 26.5 cm.

Wladimir Simon Semcesen (1906‑1969) born in Austria Hungary, settled in Oslo, Norway in 1936. In the 1950’s and 1960’s before the Cultural Revolution in China, he acquired works of art in China that he brought back to Europe.
