A Chinese Export Enameled and Partial Gilt Porcelain Armorial Platter, Qing Dynasty, circa 1765 1 x 11-1/2 x 8-3/8 inches (2.5 x 29.2 x 21.3 cm) Paper narrative affixed to reverse: The arms painted are of Topham of York, Argent, a chevron gules between three pewits' heads erased sable, quartering Boynton.Or, a fess between three crescents gules, with a red hand of Ulster denoting a baronet. The coats have been transposed, clearly through incorrect instructions being given as the crest is correct for Boynton: A goat passant sable, guttee d'eau, beard, horns and hooves or; motto 'Virtus radix honoris.' As painted, the service was made for a descendant of Topham and Boynton, but this is unlikely and the intention was probably Boynton impalding Topham/-possibly as a wedding present in 1762, or possibly after her death in 1767 and before Sir Griffith's second marriage. Sir Griffith Boynton was 6th Bart for Beverly and was appointed Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1771. In 1762 he was married in York Minster to Charlotte the eldest daughter of Francis Topham, a judge of York.
