A Chinese Gilt Copper Alloy Inset Painted Panel Snuff Bottle, 29AV
Modelled in gilt copper alloy with deep red enamel and raised gilt scroll relief decoration, the snuff bottle has a flattened ovoid form fitted with a stopper set with simulated coral, green and turquoise cabochons. Each face features an oval domed painted glass panel depicting a traditional Chinese lady in garden settings, encircled by a ring of simulated turquoise beads. Minor surface wear consistent with handling and age is visible. Comparable decorative gilt metal snuff bottles with inset painted panels and simulated stone cabochons are recorded among Chinese decorative arts. Height 8 cm (3 1/8 in.), width 6 cm (2 3/8 in.).
