A Chinese Gilt Copper Alloy Two-Handled Inset Painted Panel Snuff Bottle, 30AV
Modelled in gilt copper alloy, the snuff bottle features a flattened ovoid body flanked by a pair of ornate scrolling handles and a stopper set with simulated coral, orange and green cabochons. The body is decorated in relief with gilt foliage, green enamel leaves and red floral motifs, lined with rows of small red simulated coral beads. Each side has an oval domed painted glass panel depicting a classical Chinese beauty, with accompanying calligraphic inscriptions on one panel. Minor surface wear consistent with handling and age is visible. Comparable decorative gilt metal snuff bottles with inset painted panels and simulated stone cabochons are recorded among Chinese decorative arts. Height 9 cm (3 9/16 in.), width 5 cm (1 15/16 in.).
