A Mottled Dark Green Jade ‘Melon’ Carving, Post Republic, 96FH
Carved from greenish Hetian jade with lighter and darker tonal variations and scattered natural inclusions, the object is modeled in the form of a melon with a rounded, lobed body. The surface is articulated with evenly spaced vertical grooves radiating from the apex to the base, defining the segmented form of the fruit. The carving is compact and symmetrical, with a softly rounded profile and no visible perforation, indicating it was not intended for stringing in its current state. The surface shows a moderate polish, with areas of abrasion and minor pitting consistent with the hardness and natural texture of the stone. Such melon-shaped jade elements were produced in China during the modern period as decorative objects, paperweights, or symbolic ornaments, drawing inspiration from fruit motifs long favored in Chinese material culture. Height 3.5 cm (1 3/8 in.), width 3.2 cm (1 1/4 in.).
