A Chinese Hetian Nephrite Jade Frog Figure, 47EC
Carved from pale creamy-white Hetian jade with areas of natural yellow and russet staining, the figure is modeled as a recumbent frog shown resting with its body flattened close to the ground. The head is broad and slightly raised, with rounded protruding eyes carved in low relief and a subtly indicated mouth. The limbs are simplified and tucked beneath the body, with smooth rounded forms suggesting musculature rather than detailed anatomical definition. The back is gently domed, and the overall carving favors compact mass and volume over linear ornament. The surface is evenly polished, retaining natural inclusions, color variation, and areas of mineral staining that contribute to the visual character of the stone. Small jade frog figures were produced in China during the modern period as decorative objects or auspicious ornaments, drawing on long-standing associations of the frog with fertility, abundance, and prosperity in Chinese material culture. Height 7 cm (2 3/4 in.), width 4.2 cm (1 5/8 in.).
