A Chinese Jade Anthropomorphic Head Carving, 34FA
Carved from pale yellow jade with a creamy, semi-translucent appearance and subtle tonal variation, the object represents an anthropomorphic head rendered in relief and partial three-dimensional form. The face is composed of rounded, softly modeled features, including protruding eyes, a broad nose, and a slightly open mouth suggested through shallow carving. The surface is smoothly polished, with gently undulating contours used to define facial structure rather than sharp incision. The reverse is minimally worked, indicating the carving was intended primarily for frontal viewing. The simplified modeling and emphasis on volumetric forms correspond to modern jade carvings produced in China, which often reinterpret archaic or stylized human imagery without direct reference to specific ancient prototypes. Objects of this type are generally understood as decorative carvings rather than ritual or functional artifacts. Height 5.1 cm (2 in.), width 3 cm (1 3/16 in.).
Provenance:
Private Collection, East Asia.
