This hand-carved double-sided pendant is crafted from natural cinnabar, measuring 5cm x 3cm. The stone exhibits a vibrant saturated crimson-red colour with fine compact mineral grain and a smooth polished finish. Each side is sculpted in high relief with a mythical qilin positioned above a hollow circular disc, the beast's head raised, body curving dynamically around the upper section and its limbs resting upon the edge of the circle. The circular disc is densely covered with a textured "grains of rice" pattern and retains a central drilled hole, while the qilin displays finely scaled body details, curled tail, delicate mane and stylized horn. The outer silhouette is organic and asymmetrical, with smoothly rounded edges and crisp undercut carving. In Chinese symbolism, the qilin represents auspicious arrival, sagehood, prosperity, protection and good fortune, while the circle expresses completeness, unity and spiritual perfection.
