A Chinese Pale Greyish Jade 'Luohan Head' Carving, 15AP
This small carved bead is worked from pale greyish jade with brownish russet veining, modelled as the head of a Luohan with deeply defined facial features, prominent brows, sunken eyes, large ears and a stern facial expression, fully drilled for threading. Luohan represents enlightenment, perseverance and spiritual attainment in traditional Chinese Buddhist iconography. The jade shows a muted pale tone with natural brown mottling throughout the stone. The carving is rendered in high relief with deep incised lines to capture the aged facial texture of the Luohan. Dimensions: 3 cm - 1.7 cm
