A Chinese archaic bronze ritual wine vessel and cover, he

Warring States period / Western Han dynasty

Standing on four, short feet in the form of stylised mythical bird creatures, the side with single loop handle surmounted by a buffalo head, the cover with reticulated oval finial in the form of interlaced snakes, fitted box, 18.5cm wide.

The Property of a Lady. Purchased in Hong Kong throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

Provenance: Galaxie Art & Gift Co., Hong Kong, 8th August 1988.

Condition Report:

A restored broken-off section to the rim cover. Two further restored rim sections to the vessel , one covering a hairline and one a broken off section, and a further rim hairline; a further possible are of restoration to base. General expected areas of surface wear and encrustations. The finial of the cover also appears to have been slightly pushed in to one side, with some indentation visible to the interior of the cover.

Because of the slightly split hairline, the cover does not sit flush on the vessel.
