A Chinese bronze octafoil mirror, Tang Dynasty

A Chinese bronze octafoil mirror, Tang Dynasty (618-907), of linghua (water chestnut flower) shape and crisply cast, the knob surrounded by four animals shown in lively positions as they frolic atop a flowering scroll within the raised inner edge of the outer band cast in the eight barbed lobes with alternating insects and foliate sprays, grey patina and small patches of small reddish crystal patina, approximately 17cm diameter, 511 gramsProvenance: Purchased by the current vendors late father in the 1960's from the George Family. By repute it was collected by the British officer Robin George during the Boxer rebellion, and thence by descent through his family. George left China in 1901 for India, where he married before returning to the UK.
