[ translate ]

possibly Tang dynasty (618-907), the rounded sides rising from a circular foot to a flared rim, the centre engraved with a pheasant amongst flowers against a hammered ground in a roundel, enclosed with a key fret border to the rim, 10.7cm diameter, 78g, and a gilt-bronze plaque, in the Tang style, decorated with a boy carrying a lotus flower, seated on the back of a goose, 4.4cm long, mounted with a gold brooch fitting, marked '18k 750' (2) Provenance: From Travers Christmas Humphreys QC (15 February 1901-13 April 1983) via his wife's will executor, her goddaughter, and thence by descent. A proponent of Buddhism, he wrote a number of works on Mahayana Buddhism, and was probably the best-known British convert of his day.
