A Chinese incised Green-Ground Aubergine-Enamelled ‘Dragon’ Bowl
The deep rounded sides rising from a straight foot to a slightly flared rim, incised and painted in aubergine enamel against a green ground with two five-clawed dragons striding amidst cloud wisps in pursuit of the ‘flaming pearl’, above rocks and crashing waves, the base inscribed in underglaze blue with a six-character seal mark of Daoguang. Period: Daoguang (1821‑1850). Diameter: 15 cm.
Modelled on earlier prototypes from the Kangxi period. Bowls of this design from the Kangxi and Qianlong reigns are illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures in the Palace Museum. Miscellaneous Enamelled Porcelains Plain Tricolour Porcelains, Shanghai, 2009, pls 126 and 130.
