A Chinese, or possibly Mongolian, 'eating set' and a silk sash, possibly c. 1900.

The 'eating set', overall length 310 mm. incorporating, within a wooden sheath mounted in plated white metal, a knife and two chopsticks with, in external rear compartments, a small toothpick and a small ear-spoon; the knife with a figured wooden handle with white metal pommel and ferrule, the blade of wedge-section with a chamfered back, 183 mm long, struck with (illegible) characters; the chopsticks of blackened wood, round-section with white metal finials, 282 mm long; with black suspension ribbon and green fittings.

The sash of crimson silk, 464 mm wide and 3660 mm long, including fringes at either end.

The blade of the knife rusted and the sheath mounts worn with polishing but otherwise in very good condition, the sash particularly so.

Although Dobell is believed to have visited China and Japan, as well as other SE Asian countries. in c.1925, it is possible that these items were souvenirs collected when he was in China during and after the Boxer Rebellion of 1900-02.
