A Collection of Alfred Meakin Solway Pattern Tableware

A collection of twenty-one pieces of English semi-porcelain tableware manufactured by Alfred Meakin in Tunstall, Staffordshire. The set is decorated in the Solway pattern, which features a wide apple-green border overlaid with gilt-toned scrolling filigree and circular medallions. This border is accented by floral cartouches containing hand-painted orange and yellow flowers with green foliage, bounded by a black transfer-printed bead and reel swaging line. Each piece is finished with a gilt rim. The underside of the pieces bears a black transfer-printed mark consisting of a crown above the words ALFRED MEAKIN, ENGLAND and the pattern name SOLWAY in quotation marks. The collection includes:

A large oval serving platter featuring a scalloped rim and moulded handle details at either end.

A square-form covered vegetable tureen with a footed base, flared rim with moulded handles, and a domed lid topped with a central knob finial.

A cream jug or sauce boat of bulbous form with a pinched pouring spout and a scrolled handle.

A set of eleven dinner plates with scalloped gilt edges.

A group of seven smaller side or salad plates matching the primary decoration.

More Information

The collection shows significant wear to the gilt rims across most pieces, with heavy rubbing particularly evident on the edges of the dinner plates (photo 5) and the tureen (photo 9). Fine glaze crazing is visible across the majority of the service. Several plates exhibit brown organic staining and discoloration concentrated in the central wells (photo 7). The underside of the tureen lid and the platter base show scattered black firing specks or kiln dust under the glaze (photo 11). No chips or cracks are visible in the provided photographs.
