A Collection of Approximately 50 Vintage Rugby Union and Rugby League Programmes.
A collection of approximately 50 vintage rugby union and rugby league matchday programmes, primarily manufactured in Great Britain and dating from the 1950s. The lot comprises a coherent single-owner style collection featuring international fixtures, club matches, and regional tournaments centred around Twickenham Stadium, Cardiff Arms Park, and the London rugby scene.
The collection includes several International Championship matches such as England v France (1953, 1955, 1957, 1959), England v Wales (1954, 1956, 1958), and England v Scotland (1953, 1955, 1959). Touring side programmes feature London Counties v Australia (1957), Combined Services v Australia (1957), and London Counties v South Africa (1951). Notable club programmes represent London Welsh RFC, Harlequin Football Club, and Rosslyn Park. A specific Rugby League example is included for the 1957 Challenge Cup Final, Barrow v Leeds at Wembley Stadium.
The covers feature vibrant period graphic designs with printed text. Several programmes, such as the England v France 1955 issue, bear a printed facsimile signature in the lower right corner reading J. P. Jordan. One Welsh programme features a handwritten ink signature reading W. H. Clement. The programmes are primarily constructed from printed paper and card with stapled spines.
More Information
The collection shows varying degrees of age-related wear consistent with mid-20th-century ephemera. Common defects include surface soiling and foxing to white covers, particularly evident on the 1951 London Counties v South Africa programme (photo 15). Creasing and folding are visible on the larger 1958 Schoolboys' Match programme (photo 4). Rusted staples have resulted in small stains to the spines of several items. Adhesive tape residue is visible on the spines of the England v Wales 1958 and England v South Africa 1952 programmes (photos 3 and 12). Occasional small tears are present at the edges and corners of the more frequently handled issues.
