A Collection of W. Goebel Friar Tuck Monk Ceramic Kitchen and Tableware.
A collection of ten ceramic kitchenware and decorative items manufactured by W. Goebel in Western Germany, dating to the mid-1950s. The lot features a consistent Friar Tuck monk motif throughout, finished in a combination of matte brown glaze and hand-painted details. The set includes:
A large ceramic cookie jar or canister. The base is incised K 29 and bears a blue printed mark of a stylized bee inside a V. It is further marked in black print © by W. Goebel 1955 and Western Germany.
A tall ceramic decanter featuring a cork stopper.
A ceramic pitcher with a spout formed by the monk's hat. The base is incised S 141/1 and bears a blue printed V with a stylized bee and a small dot to the left, alongside the printed text Western Germany.
A ceramic condiment set presented on a heart-shaped tray with a central loop handle. The set comprises a lidded mustard pot with a ceramic spoon and two salt and pepper shakers.
A perpetual calendar stand with a small monk figure, containing paper cards showing Saturday, September, and 8.
A small ceramic open egg cup or holder.
A small ceramic creamer jug.
A small ceramic spoon rest or shallow dish in the form of a monk.
More Information
The collection is in generally good condition, although several items exhibit notable damage. The head of one salt/pepper shaker on the heart-shaped tray has a significant spiderweb crack across the top (photo 5). The second shaker on the tray has a visible hairline crack to the back of the head (photo 3). There is visible paint loss and rubbing to the white raised rope belt details on several pieces, most notably the spoon rest (photo 7) and the small creamer jug (photo 10). The paper calendar cards show age-related yellowing and light wear to the edges (photo 8). The cookie jar and decanter appear structurally sound with no visible chips or cracks.
