Lot Essay
With its robust body raised on short cabriole legs, this commode is a typical example of a Danish dragkiste, which was a popular form in Denmark during the eighteenth century and can be found in both vernacular and courtly interiors. Whereas more modest versions were most often decorated with polychrome-painting, richer models served as a canvas for exotic veneers or pictorial marquetry. The inlay of this dragkiste is related to the oeuvre of Jørgen Nielsen, a prominent cabinetmaker active in the city of Rudkøbing, on the island of Langeland, southwest of Copenhagen. A commode with comparable inlay by Nielsen was sold Nagel Auction, Stuttgart, 6 December 2002, lot 875, while a pair of commodes with even closer marquetry and mounted with very similar brass handles recently sold on the Danish art market.
