LOT 3512

A Delft pottery "Hansje-in-de-kelder" ornamental jug

[ translate ]

18th century, Netherlands

"Hansje in de kelder" has an English equivalent in "Jack in the Cellar", meaning an unborn child (or a child on the way). This jug was always referred to by this name by the family where it comes from. This exceptional Delft pottery ornamental jug has a hollow centre that contains a figure of a baby. The sides are covered by two pieces of bevelled glass. Decorated in blue and white with floral patterns and putti picking grapes and a yellow bird's head spout. No maker's marks. This model is more often found as a puzzle jug, without the baby and glass sides.

H 32 cm

Small chips around the edges of the base and the rim. Light restoration.
