A Directoire Parcel Gilt and Patinated Bronze Pendule l'Afrique, After the Model by Jean-Simon Deverberie (French, 1784-1824)

Early 19th Century

the dial signed Vallette à Paris, the seated huntress personifying Africa and flanked by a panther and turtle, the movement stamped M, B and 9240, further inscribed 15.
Height 17 1/4 x width 14 1/2 x depth 6 1/4 inches.

European Furniture & Decorative Arts
Lacking a winding key and pendulum. The movement has not been tested or inspected by a horologist. The hands can be manually advanced and the movement goes to strike at the hour and the half hour, but the hammer does not make contact with the bell so there is no chime sound. The circular case is slightly bent out of shape on the backside and there is no rear cover over the works, The face has a hinged cover but the glass is missing. In otherwise very attractive, stable condition, the bronze with an overall even, rich patina and the gilt with a bright luster. Minor scuffs to the enamel face but no cracks or losses. The huntress' right foot is loose on its screw but stays in place; needs tightening. Some of the feet supporting the case are slightly bent askew but the clock rests stably on a flat surface.
