[ translate ]

attributed to De Witte Starre (the White Star) factory, in three sections, of baluster form with domed spreading foot, with eight knopped spouts around the shoulder, fitted with a central circular knopped section holding a smaller surmounting baluster vase with five knopped spouts, painted around the mid-section with panels of vases of flowers and scrolls, birds perched on rockwork, Oriental flowering plants and vases on tables, with blue-ground lappet borders reserved with scrolling flowering foliage

(3)

Height 63.5 cm; 25 in.

Catalogue Note:
This vase is of very closely related form and decoration to a four-tier example in The Minneapolis Institute of Art (acc. no. 2017.9a-d), formerly in a Private Collection in the U.S.A, and acquired in 2017 from Aronson Antiquairs, Amsterdam. The present vase is unmarked but, like the Minneapolis example, can be attributed to the De Witte Ster (The White Star) on comparison with another three-tier baluster vase of similar form, recorded in the Moravian Gallery in Brno (inv. no. 15.252), which is marked with a blue star on the base of the lower section, identifying it as a made in the De Witte Ster (The White Star) factory. The Moravian Gallery vase also features stylistically similar decoration to the present vase with lappet shaped panels alternately painted with vases of flowers and flowering plants. All three vases share common decorative elements but with some variations in form and construction.

Provenance:
With Aronson Antiquairs, Amsterdam, 2013.
