(A) ENGRAVED COLT 1849 POCKET PERCUSSION REVOLVER.

Manufactured 1862. A scarce configuration with six shot cylinder, and horizontally dovetailed front sight. Engraved in the style of Gustave Young or his shop with rolling acanthus scroll on a stippled ground, with iconic dog head on lug and wolf's head hammer. Cylinder rolled with stagecoach holdup scene. One piece ivory grips. Barrel with 2 line Hartford address, "COLTS PATENT" on left side of frame, and a small "2" stamped on left side of barrel lug. Matching serial numbers on barrel assembly, frame, trigger guard, butt, and cylinder; partial numbers on rammer assembly and cylinder axle. The so-called "punch mark" that accompanies serial numbers on barrel assembly, frame, trigger guard, and butt is believed to denote factory engraving. Accompanied by some correspondence between Paul Shumaker and Edward Parish discussing the configuration of this revolver, and a copy of "Colt's Variations of the Old Model Pocket Pistol 1848 to 1872" by Shumaker. PROVENANCE: From the personal and advanced collection of Dr. Jim Watson of Scottsdale, Arizona. CONDITION: Very good as partially refinished. Barrel with approximately 10% bluing in protected areas, most under rammer, balance a smooth gunmetal grey with some age related mossing. Frame with traces of case colors in similar protected areas such as crevice of recoil shield. Trigger guard and backstrap with the majority of silver, thinning through to brass at high edges; backstrap resilvered, probably in the period, with engraving and legends softened. Cylinder scene largely legible, some softening towards rear. Mechanically fine, bore has good rifling and mild areas of oxidation throughout.
