(A) ENGRAVED NEW HAVEN ARMS VOLCANIC LEVER ACTION
This carbine is featured on page 79 and on the back cover of the book "Volcanic Firearms: Predecessor To The Winchester Rifle" by Edmund E. Lewis and Stephen W. Rutter. 1 line address stamped on the top of the octagonal barrel is "NEW HAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB. 14, 1854". The New Haven carbines came in 3 barrel lengths. The barrel lengths could be had as 16", 21", and 25", with an estimate of only a 100 21" barreled carbines having been manufactured. This is the second rarest carbine barrel length and has a number 2 barrel. German silver blade front sight and an adjustable rear sight. The silver plated action and buttplate are factory engraved with scrollwork and vignettes. The barrel, magazine, finger lever, trigger and hammer were blue on this gun. The original straight walnut stock fits the action perfectly. This carbine fired the .41 caliber rocket ball self contained cartridge. The magazine would hold 25 rounds. The magazine spring and follower work perfectly. CONDITION: This fine carbine retains the majority of the factory applied silver plate finish. With most of the finish loss being on the upper half of the left side of the action. It also has some slight high edge wear. The barrel, lever, trigger and hammer have turned to an even pleasing brown with shades of blue in the protected areas. The stock retains virtually all of the factory applied varnish with just a few slight handling and storage marks. Bright and shiny bore with sharp lands and grooves. The action is crisp and precise. The screws show that this gun has been taken down a few times. This is truly a stunning New Haven Arms Carbine and worthy of any collection.
