Built by Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1880. Gun is one of 9 rifles listed in Herbert G. Houze's book "The Winchester Model 1876 "Centennial" Rifle" on page 155 as "Eng like 1-1000" in .45-60. Gun is also pictured on page 123 of R.L. Wilson's book "Winchester: The Golden Age of American Gunmaking and the Winchester 1 of 1000". Blued 28" octagon barrel chambered in .45-60 W.C.F., marked with "Winchester's Repeating Arms, New Haven Ct." address over "King's-Improvement-Patented-March 29, 1866, October 16, 1860" patents and "CAL 45-60" at breech. Barrel has hunting front sight and 42 series adjustable graduated flip rear sight, and Winchester factory tang combination vernier peep sight. Barrel has floral "1 of 1000" style muzzle engraving with platinum band and floral breech engraving with line border around caliber and platinum banded breech. Blued full length magazine tube. Case hardened Second Model pistol grip frame with screw attached dust cover rail, brass "45-60" marked elevator, plain trigger, and tang marked "1185" with "XXX" under the wood, and serial numbered "13600" stamped behind lever latch. Deluxe XXX checkered walnut pistol grip stock has "P1185" stamped in top tang channel with ebony Christmas tree shaped grip inlay. Case hardened crescent steel trap buttplate with original 4-piece Winchester steel cleaning rod inside. Matching diamond pattern checkered walnut forearm with case hardened nosecap. Cody Research letter from 1980 confirms all options and was shipped to the warehouse in February of 1880. CONDITION: 92% fading original factory barrel blue with some light edge wear. Magazine tube has several areas turning a plum color from handling with edges turning silver. 92% fading case colors starting to turn plum with slight wear on handling areas and evidence of some old oil remaining over finish. Nosecap and buttplate retain 80% fading colors with some light discoloration marks on buttplate. Good action screws. 90% of a later coat of finish, with sharp checkering, and light usage dings and bruises. Bright and shiny bore with visible rifling and crisp mechanics. A super rare 76 that would be hard to improve upon and possibly one of the rarest 76 Winchesters extant!
