A FINE 18TH CENTURY NEAPOLITAN GOLD PIQUE AND MOTHER OF PEARL INLAID BOX IN THE MANNER OF GENNARO SARAOthe tortoiseshell necessaire box (etui case) with canted angles and removable cover, the top of the cover inlaid in pique work with the initials P.F., the box also inlaid with mother of pearl decoration of dogs and doves with stylised motifs of leaves and flowerheads, amongst gold inlay,9.5cm in length, 4cm wideThis lot is subject to CITES due to the tortoiseshell.Catalogue Note:During the second quarter of the 18th century, a small number of highly skilled Neapolitan craftsmen were producing objects of vertu of this type in tortoiseshell pique; including della Torre and of course Gennaro Sarao. The works that they produced were highly prized, exquisite objects, decorated with rare and precious materials such gold, mother of pearl, pewter and tortoiseshell. Gennaro Sarao was active between 1731 and 1770 and enjoyed patronage from Carlo III and his wife Maria Amalia of Saxony.Related Literature: A. Kugel 'Pique', Rizzoli, New York. Ill. 49 shows a coffer attributed to Sarao, with similar mother of pearl scrolling foliate inlay.
