A FINE AND RARE BRONZE FIGURE OF AVALOKITESHVARA.
Thailand, Pra Kon Chai, 8th c. Height 49.5 cm.
The youthful bodhisattva standing in slight tribhanga, the two remaining hands poised in vitarka mudra. His hair arranged into a chignon of looped curls with a figure of Amithaba at the front. Some dark green encrustation. Minor restoration.
Provenance: With Connie Mangskau (by repute). Sotheby's London, 12 October 1989, lot 70. The Buckingham Collection, Anguilla. Thence by descent.
A Thermoluminescence test by Oxford University Laboratories no. 481m1 of March 1989 confirms an age between 700 and 1300 years.
