A FINE GOLD LACQUER FOUR-CASE INRO WITH A DRAGON AND MOUNT FUJI

Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of upright rectangular form and oval section, the black-lacquered ground with finely sprinkled gold nashiji, decorated in superb with gold and silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, depicting to the front a soaring dragon among the clouds amidst red lacquer flames, its visible eye inlaid in aogai and the scaly body superbly detailed. The verso with a view of Mount Fuji among togidashi clouds, its slopes detailed with kirigane flakes. The interior compartments of nashiji with gold fundame rims.

HEIGHT 8.3 cm, LENGTH 5.7 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear and rubbing to lacquer. Minor losses along the edges and few typical losses to kirigane flakes.
Provenance: Mes Laurin, Guilloux, Buffetaud et Tailleur, Paris, 7 October 1987, lot 146. A French private collection, acquired from the above.
