A FINE INDIAN MINIATURE PAINTING DEPICTING A ROYAL RETINUE CAUGHT IN A HAILSTORM, PAHARI REGION, LATE 18TH-19TH CENTURY

North India. Watercolors, gouache, and gold and silver paint on paper. Finely painted, depicting a military encampment caught in a sudden hailstorm. Soldiers abandon their vessels and activities, leaving garments spread across the ground to be washed by the downpour. Some cover their bleeding heads as they are struck by hail, while others hurry toward shelter. Horses and elephants crowd the encampment, and a general sits within a tent in the lower register seemingly unaffected by the commotion outside. At the upper left, a marching troop advances beyond the storm.
