A FINE, LARGE AND RARE CHINESE PORCELAIN BLUE AND WHITE BIANHU OR MOONFLASK
in Ming dynasty style, 18th century, of flattened globular form with a rectangular foot and tall turned cylindrical neck flanked by leafy scroll handles, the body with raised central bosses to each side decorated with a stylised lotus flower head, surrounded by six further lotus flower heads and leafy tendrils, 49.5cm high x 38cm wide
Moonflasks of this type are modelled after early Ming dynasty examples, which were inspired by Islamic metalware forms. The 'heaped and piled' decoration was a favourite of the Ming emperors and is incredibly difficult to replicate. Similar vases from the 18th century, with unusual central bosses and lotus-flower decoration, appear in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Blue and White Porcelain with Underglaze Red (I), Shanghai, 2010.
Provenance:
A French private collection, acquired on the Rue de Le Boétie, Paris, 1990.
