A FINE RUSSIAN ICON THE RESURRECTION & DESCENT, 19TH C. The complex rendering finely painted and depicting at top the Resurrected Christ above His empty tomb, beneath Him the Myrrh-Bearing Women. In the left upper corner is Peter discovering the empty tomb, and at upper right the Good Thief entering heaven, "Amen, I say unto thee that on this day ye shall be with me in Paradise." In the middle left region is shown an angel beating Satan and the lower center region depicts Christ standing atop the broken gates of Hades and grasping the hand of Adam as he releases the righteous men and women of the Old Testament from bondage into heaven. At lower right is a depiction of Christ and Peter at the Sea of Tiberius. The left margin is painted with the family Saint Nikiphor and the right margin with Saint Mary of Egypt. The upper margin inscribed in Old Church Slavonic identifying the scene as "The Image Of The Resurrection Of Our Lord Jesus Christ." The overall style and quality would suggest an iconographer trained in one of the three icon painting villages northeast of Moscow: Palekh, Mstera, and Kholui. 12.75 inches x 10.5 inches (32.5 x 26.5 cm).
