A FRAMED BATTLE HONOURS OF THE 35TH SCINDE HORSES REGIMENT the banner embroidered with patches commemorating various battles including 'Meenaee Hyderabad, 1843'; Mooltan; Cutchee and examples in Perisan/Urdu script, and field service forage 'Torin' type side hat, and a selection of cap badges and buttons 85.5 x 144.5cm (entire); Flag, 130 x 72cm (excl. fringed sections); framed dimensions 154 x 95cm
Provenance: Col James. Napier Simonds (1884 - 1948), gifted to him on his retirement 1936; thence by descent

This guidon flag commemorates a series of battles and military campaigns carried out by the Scinde Irregular Horse cavalry regiment under the British East India Company, and later the British Crown. The regiment fought in the mid 1800's in the Sindh region in modern-day Pakistan, and it was led by Captain John Jacob (1812 – 1858) under General Sir Charles Napier (1782 – 1853). Embroidered in English, Persian/Urdu script, the patches highlight battles from the Anglo-Persian War (1856-1857) and the Indian Rebellion of 1857 as well as English victories at Hyderabad and Meeanee in 1843.

The silk details in the embroidery, fringed edges, and tassels indicate that this piece was created as a commemorative gift rather than as a flag meant to be flown in active combat.

An almost identical example is held in the collection of the National Army Museum belonging to Lt Col J P Thompson OBE (1900 – 1970) (NAM 2014-01-17).
