(A) FRENCH MODEL 1766 FLINTLOCK MUSKET OF MAUBEUGE

This model was one of the most widely used arms by American forces during the Revolutionary War when thousands of this model and others were sent to America by our French allies. The musket has a 44 - 5/8" tapered round .75 caliber smoothbore barrel with bayonet lug mounted on the bottom towards the muzzle. The barrel is retained by three iron bands. The flat lockplate is inscribed "Maubeuge" in the center. Standard Model 1766 iron furniture. Walnut stock of classic French form. Right side of butt carved with initials "PI & OPI", probably for the initials of the soldier who carried it. Complete with a period repaired iron ramrod. Complete with proper triangular socket bayonet, with retaining ring. The bayonet fits well and has a matching patina. Complete with a contemporary scabbard. CONDITION: Barrel and furniture have been lightly cleaned and now retain a grey patina with some polishing marks and scattered areas of pitting, touch hole has been re-bushed. Lock retains an even grey patina with some scattered freckling. Lock is in its original flintlock configuration and functions well. Stock shows heavy use and scattered marks, as well as some minor splintering to the forend on both sides, and some minor losses along the barrel. Bayonet retains a matching patina and markings on bayonet are very good. Scabbard is contemporary. A very nice classic French Revolutionary War musket.
