A Fine Old Bamana Nyeleni Female Effigy Ex Banks Collection

A dramatic carved wooden female sculpture with strong carving style and rigid form. Female figures of this kind are known as nyeleni among the Bamana people of Mali. The figures are an idealization of youthful feminine beauty. The term nyeleni is derived from a traditional Bamana girl's name and has multiple interpretations, including pretty little one or little ornament. This figure is carved from a heavy dense wood and has incised linear designs, metal embellished eyes and navel and a very well worn surface patina.
