A Fine Pre Colombian Veracruz Figure, 7-8 Century A.D.

Hollow terracotta "sonrientes" of which this one is typical, are highly atypical of most Mesoamerican sculpture as they are always depicted smiling. Like so many pre-Columbian artifacts, sonrientes are found in burials, which by modern Western standards, seems no occasion for cheer. Perhaps their makers had inside knowledge about the Other Side lacked by us. This example stands approximately 17". It, and many lots forthcoming, are from the estate of a true antiquity connoisseur in every sense of the word. This antiquarian truly enjoyed the treasures collected as well as world travel, humanitarianism, and missionary work. This monumental Central Florida collection compiled in their lifetime of art and cultural touchstones is presented in this and many more future sales.
