A Florentine terracotta relief of the Virgin and Child

Ceramic relief with arched terminal formed from a garland of leaves and citrus fruits and a winged angel's head in the centre. The Virgin is depicted with Christ seated on Her right arm against a light blue background. Separately fired bracket with a large angel's head flanked by cornucopia. A breakage to the Christ Child's halo, yellowed retouches to the chin of the angel on the bracket, the Virgin's knee and several other small areas, glaze chips. H 68, W 31.5 cm. Mounted on red velvet covered panel with metal bail, H 77, W 40 cm.
Florence, circle or follower of Andrea della Robbia, early 16th C.

Traditionally attributed to Andrea della Robbia (1435 - 1525), today this small high relief is more plausibly associated with the circle or successors of the great Florentine sculptor. Benedetto Buglioni (1459/60 - 1521), whose workshop also produced glazed terracottas in the style of Andrea della Robbia, may be the possible author. A large altarpiece from this workshop with two assisting figures in a white arabesque surround can be found in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, obj. no. BK-16978. Another large example with a figure of the Madonna in an identical pose and a similar Infant Jesus can be found in the Museo dell'Ospedale degli Innocenti collection in Florence.
