A French 18-Bore Flintlock Sporting Gun
By Pielteiran Planchan A Sedan, Circa 1680
With tapering sighted barrel in three stages separated by mouldings, the octagonal breech section struck with horseshoe-shaped barrel-forger's mark of G. Boulanger of Sedan (Neue Støckel 75), plain tang, signed border engraved convex lock decorated with a parrot perched on foliated scrollwork and on the pointed tail with a figure of Fame amid further foliated scrollwork, the pan with sprung swing-out safety-steel, varnished moulded figured walnut full stock with a raised panel at the barrel tang, polished steel mounts, flat side-plate pierced and engraved with flowers and scrollwork inhabited by a mounted horseman, two dogs and a bird, convex trigger-guard engraved on the bow with a spray of stylised foliage, rounded butt-plate with long tang, four baluster ramrod-pipes, and iron-capped ramrod, probably original, the butt-plate engraved 'No. 12' (iron parts with scattered minor surface pitting)
