A French Boulle tortoise shell inkstand - Napoléon III period 19th Century rectangular shaped with tortoise shell inlaid and brass mountings, collectively known as Boulle. The front has a trough made for pens and the other side of the inkwell has a lidded compartment for pen nibs, sealing wax or other desk-top accouterments. The tortoiseshell was attached to the hardwood frame with coloured matter below to give this highly sought after reddish-orange colouring to these works of art. This process first developed by the French cabinetmaker, André-Charles Boulle (11 November 1642 - 28 February 1732), highly popular in nineteenth Century. Dimensions 34,5 x 24.5 cm, height 9 cm. Weight 3272 gr. Item condition grading: **** good. Ce.S.Ar. Certificate of antiquity (pre-1947).
