A French Gothic style patinated terracotta female bust, possibly of Clementia of Hungary, ca. 1900
H 31 cm
Clementia of Hungary (1293-1328) was Queen of France and Navarre as the second wife of King Louis X. She was the daughter of Charles Martel of Anjou, the titular King of Hungary, and Clemence of Austria. The bust shows various similarities with the effigy sculpted around 1328 and attributed to Jean Pépin de Huy. The statue depicts the queen lying supine with her hands joined in prayer, lacking a scepter, and featuring a small sculpted dog at her feet as a symbol of loyalty. The statue was originally placed at the Church of the Jacobins (Dominicans) in Paris where she was buried, and was later moved to the Basilica of Saint-Denis in 1816 following the disruptions of the French Revolution.
