A French bronze tazza, cast by Barbedienne, after Ferdinand Levillain (1837-1905), c.1870, the shallow dish with central relief depicting classical figures entitled MENALCAS MOPSUS, INSCRIBE F.LEVILLAIN, the foot rim inscribed F.BARBEDIENNE, 48cm wide Note: This tazza is an example of the collaboration between Levillain and the highly acclaimed bronzier of the period, Ferdinand Barbedienne (d.1892). The foundry established in 1839, was renowned for bronze editions, but also produced decorative objects in styles that reflected the various exotic and revival trends popular at the time.
