Gouache on ivory portrait in a black lace stole. Signed "Cécile Villeneuve" right. Inscirbed and dated by the artist "Jeanne Paule de St Aulaire Marquise d'Harcourt Paris 1865" on the backing card. 10.4 x 8.5 cm. Original brass frame, stamped "Alph. Giroux à Paris".

The Parisian writer Jeanne Paule Beaupoil de Saint-Aulaire (1817 - 1893) married the French diplomat George Marquis d'Harcourt d'Olonde in 1841. One of her best-known works is the biography "La Vie de Jeanne d'Arc", which she published in 1846.
