A French portrait miniature of a lady with roses

Gouache on ivory portrait of a lady with a blue ribbon in her hair. 7.0 x 6.4 cm. Round silver capsule frame with braided moulding.
Attributed to Pierre Adolphe Hall, 1770s / 1780s.

The Swede Pierre Adolphe Hall (1739 - 1793) initially studied medicine and natural sciences at the faculty of Uppsala University, where Carl Linnaeus also worked. It was only after he had settled in Paris that he began to work as a miniaturist. In 1769 he was elected to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture and received commissions from the French royal family. The present portrait miniature of a young woman exemplifies his talent through the fine details, hatching and white highlights with which he enlivens the subject.
