A French tilting coffee maker

[ translate ]

A French tilting coffee maker

Unmarked. Cracks and chips to the porcelain. H 40.5 cm.

2nd half 19th C.

To use the machine, water is poured into the porcelain vessel and the coffee powder into the glass. The burner below heats the water to boiling, which creates a vacuum and causes the water to rise through the pipe into the glass, where it falls onto the coffee powder. The tilting mechanism makes the vessel move up, the flap of the burner closes, and the flame is extinguished. When the porcelain cools down, the vacuum effect causes the coffee to flow through the sieve and can be served via the tap.
