Fritz Scholder
Luiseño, (1937-2005), "Indian with Mask", 1968, oil on canvas, signed upper right, titled, dated and inscribed on the fold-over edge verso.
height 30in, width 30 in
Provenance
Purchased from Matthew Chase Ltd., Santa Fe, NM, 8 July, 1999; accompanied by the invoice
Property from the Estate of Arnold and Lorlee Tenenbaum

Published
Telfair Museum of Art, Bold Expressions: The Collection of Lorlee and Arnold Tenenbaum, Savannah, GA, 2023, p. 52-53. "Often associated with a Pop aesthetic, Scholder used bright colors and modern-day cultural objects juxtaposed against traditional Indigenous symbols, masks, and patterns to expose the dueling forces of contemporary Native American life. Indian with Mask shows a portrait of a masked individual against a flat green background. The eyes and mouth are represented by dark rectangular slits, leading to more sustained attention to features of the mask: the feathered headdress, the protruding ears, and the elaborate collar. The inability of the viewer to access the person behind the mask and assess their true sense of identity makes this a psychologically charged representation."

Exhibited
Bold Expressions: The Collection of Lorlee and Arnold Tenenbaum, Telfair Museums' Jepson Center for the Arts, Savannah, GA, March 10 - July 9, 2023
