A GENDJE LONG RUG, CENTRAL CAUCASUS

circa 1880

approximately 256 by 108cm; 8ft. 5in., 3ft. 7in.

Condition Report:
Rug is woven in opposite orientation to the way it is illustrated in the printed catalogue and illustrated correctly online. Soft shaggy wool, generally very good pile, varying from 1cm in borders, with some minor areas of wear to knot bars in localised parts of the yellow field. Light oxidisation to walnut browns. Some spot repiling. Small irregular reweave approx 2 by 2cm in border and a band of repiling in the white approx 50 cm in length and varying from one or two knots in width to about 3 cm in width, infilling between the inner guard stripe and the crab motifs (additonal images available), barely noticeable on the face of the rug. A handful of minute areas of repiling scattered elsewhere. Overall in lovely condition and with an amazingly clear bright yellow ground. Original side cords, ends with teased warp fringing and secured with cotton herringbone tape.
