A GEORGE II FIGURED WALNUT AND FEATHER BANDED BACHELOR'S CHEST OF DRAWERS CIRCA 1730With hinged fold over top81cm high, 76cm wide, 37cm deep Provenance: Private Collection, LondonFor a closely related chest of drawers of the period see, Adam Bowett, Early Georgian Furniture 1715-1740, Antique Collectors Club, 2009, page 100, plate 3:12. Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches, abrasions consistent with age and useThe top with some old ink-marks and stainingOld splits and cracks, some chips and losses. Some chips, losses, and replacements to veneers (see images). The inset surface is later applied, this is a suede type material and appears in fair order overall. The handles are replacements throughout, there are shadows and marks to the drawer fronts where previous handles have sat. There is a French type key that operates all the locks at present, this key is almost certainly a replacement.Feet are extremely well matched replacements. They have been made using old veneers and supporting blocks. Two strips of later tape applied to gaps between backboards. From the interior it can be seen that there are some fillets of later timber and glue residue to the gaps between backboards. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition.
