A GEORGE II WALNUT AND GILTWOOD WALL MIRROR CIRCA 1745-50 With inscribed paper label to reverse dated 'May 24th 1748' 172cm high, 82cm wideFor a walnut mirror of the period incorporating elaborate carved giltwood elements, see Graham Child, World Mirrors: 1650-1900, Sotheby's Publications, 1990, page 109, figure 120. Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and useOld chips and splits, some old losses. some old repairs, some re-glued elements. Various old wear and loss to the gilding. Some likely areas of old refreshed gilding but sympathetically. The walnut element with fading overall and with evidence of worm damage (holes) (see additional images) The rear panels appear original but with later stuck down paper that bears various losses. The mirror plates bear expected depletion in the form of grey/ black spotting and some relatively small areas of loss to the silvering. Both mirror plates appear to be of the period.
