A GESSO & REISIN INLAID WRITING TABLE CABINET, 19TH CENTURY, ITALIAN OR GERMANY
Wooden cabinet inlaid with white gesso paste in imitation of ivory, and resin in imitation of mother-of-pearl. Resting on four legs, this cabinet has an exterior decoration alternating discs and diamonds inlaid in gesso. The flap reveals fifteen drawers with grips in the shape of crescents of oriental influence. The drawers are adorned with resin plates in imitation of mother-of-pearl and framed with gesso friezes engraved with facing narwhals and flower motifs. The inside of the flap has the same decoration centered on a diamond.
The Ottoman influence and taste for Indian Turkish and mother-of-pearl objects was particularly popular in Italy and southern Germany
