A GOLD AND BLACK-LACQUER MATCHING SET OF A RYOSHIBAKO (DOCUMENT BOX) AND SUZURIBAKO (BOX FOR WRITING UTENSILS) IN RINPA STYLE

Meiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-1926) era, early 20th century
The matt roiro-nuri ground of both boxes lacquered in gold hiramaki-e and mura-nashiji with details inlaid in lead and shell depicting a diagonal formation of cranes in flight, the design extending down the sides, the inside surfaces of both boxes embellished in rich nashiji; the interior of the suzuribako fitted with a removable tray containing the suzuri (ink-grinding stone) and the suiteki (water dropper) in the form of a silvered-metal kettle, with a tosu (paper-cutting knife) and two fude (writing brushes), each within black-lacquered holders decorated with karakusa ('Chinese grasses'), unsigned; each with a wood storage box. The ryoshibako: 17cm x 43cm x 35.2cm (6 5/8in x 17cm x 13 7/8in); the suzuribako: 4cm x 23.5cm x 26cm (1 5/8in x 9¼in x 10¼in). (12).
